I think its safe to say that one of the biggest challenges when raising children is sleep (or lack there of) and figuring out how to get your little one to sleep through the night.
This week we chat with Richelle Franklin - a Mother of two young children, a Nurse, Midwife and Certified Sleep Consultant. Richelle has over 14 years experience working in Public and Private Hospitals. Richelle's experience includes working in Birthing Suites, Post Natal Services and Special Care Nursery.
Richelle has started her own business Sleep Right Tonight and is passionate about supporting families that are struggling to get their little ones to sleep.
Tell us a bit about your business ‘Sleep Right Tonight’ and what you do to help families.
Sleep right tonight is my newest passion for helping families. I have been a Midwife for over 15 years now and still work in the Birth Suite at St Vincent’s Private. After having children of my own and having been through the rough sleepless nights, I wanted to reach out to sleep deprived families. I used the Sleep Sense Program with my own children, so I know how successful it can be. I completed an extensive training period with Dana Obleman (CEO and Founder of Sleep Sense) and I am now a Certified Sleep Consultant who works with babies and toddlers/children who are not sleeping well.
I love seeing the changes in parents when they have had their first solid night’s sleep in months or even years.
What does your typical day look like as a mother and business owner?
It’s busy!! I’m not going to lie, with two young kids and working permanent night shift – and running my own business – my days are busy! But, for now it all works!
I make calls and speak with the parents around Mum life. I have my two kids at home with me almost every day, so I don’t actually have set business hours at the moment. I try to take and make calls in the morning so the rest of the day can be “Mum time”.
What motivated you to start Sleep Right Tonight?
As a Mother of two young children, I remember all too well that overwhelming feeling of a baby that doesn’t sleep well. At some stage we’ve all had that dreaded feeling of “how am I going to do this, and when will I sleep again?” After the Sleep Sense Program changed my family’s life, I made it my ambition to help other families achieve that feeling of a great night’s sleep.
I have a Bachelor of Nursing and a Post Graduate Diploma in Midwifery. For over 15 years I have worked as Midwife in both Public and Private Hospitals in the Birthing Suites and Post Natal wards.
Sleep right tonight is a fantastic extension from my Career as a Midwife. The two jobs work so well together!
If you could pick your happiest moment so far since starting your business, what would it be?
Hearing the sheer joy and relief in parents faces and voices when I call them and their little one has slept through the night for the first time – EVER! Just recently I called a Mother of a 9 month old for one of our follow up calls. When she answered the phone she squealed at me with absolute excitement and delight, to tell me that her baby had slept a solid 10 hours overnight for the first time ever. It was such a happy moment for me; it made my day.
What would be your advice to mums that run their own business or that are considering starting their own business?
You need to be organised and know what it is you want out of your business. It isn’t always easy and takes lots of work to make a business successful.
It takes a lot of dedication and hard work early on to establish your business initially- but you get out what you put into it!
What difficulties have you faced being both a mother and small business owner?
Honestly, I’ve been lucky so far, but I’ve put a lot of effort into starting a business from scratch. I have been successful from early on, but at times it is hard to switch off between Mum life and Business Owner.
The biggest difficulty has been the juggle between Mum life, and my business and working permanent Night shift
Three bits of advice for mumpreneurs or mumpreneurs to be?
- Know what It is your business is about and what you want it to be.
- Be organised and set yourself limits and boundaries.
- At times you’ll need to stretch yourself thin to make all aspects work, you need to ask for help and take time for yourself. It is also important to learn to say NO too.
